Even auto insurance is much cheaper in the United States than in Brazil. At least that’s what a survey done by the website Insure.com shows, which surveyed the average cost of auto insurance across all American states.
Currently, the average cost of insurance in the United States as a whole is $1,457, as shown by the Most and Least Expensive States for Car Insurance survey in the 2019 edition.
The information collected comes from 2,400 insured cars from various American states. Within each state, the price paid for car insurance from at least 10 different addresses was analyzed to form a fair average.
In the United States, insurance companies also consider the driver’s sex and age, location, owner’s financial situation, length of driving license, vehicle model, among others. All of these items can be “controlled” by the car owner.
On the other hand, there are some other specific factors that are beyond the customer’s control. US insurers also consider insurance laws, theft and robbery record fees, and even the number of uninsured car drivers in that state.
Average price of car insurance in the US, by state
The most expensive US state for auto insurance is Michigan, which ranks at the top for negative sixth year. A car insurance policy there costs an average of $2,611, which is nearly 80 percent higher than the national average of $1,457.
This happens through the applied insurance system in Michigan. In that state there is a unique car insurance system, which requires all drivers to have Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. This system helps to cover the medical expenses of the insured, family members and passengers injured in an accident.
PIP is also available in other states. However, most other US states use a system with a reasonable limit on coverage amounts. In Michigan, on the other hand, there are unlimited lifetime medical benefits for car accident victims, significantly raising the cost of insurance.
In second place with the most expensive insurance is the state of Louisiana, where there are many uninsured drivers and still many underinsured drivers who “like” to sue each other. According to one study, about 13% of Louisiana drivers do not have car insurance and another 40% use insurance with minimal coverage.
Another state is Florida, which ranked third, due to the 26.7% rate of drivers with uninsured cars. In addition, it has a higher percentage of risky drivers, such as students (due to the different universities there), older drivers and drivers unfamiliar with the local roads (with a large number of tourists).
